Wolves Under 23s battled to a hard-earned 2-0 win over Newcastle United on a cold night at AFC Telford’s New Bucks Head on Monday evening.
On a testing surface, Wolves began the game stronger with Jose Xavier and Sherwin Seedorf both going close for the hosts.
After the break, Jon Flatt made three strong saves to keep the two sides on level terms and it was in the 56th minute that Wolves took the lead.
Oskar Buur Rasmussen found himself in space on the corner of the Newcastle area. He drove a low cross across the face of goal and Jose Xavier was there to finish from 6 yards out.
Wolves then doubled their advantage in the 74th minute as substitute Will Randall’s driven effort was turned into his own goal by a Newcastle defender.
The win means that Wolves remain unbeaten in Premier League 2 since October and it leaves Wolves 8th in the table on 21 points from 15 games.
Speaking after the game, Scott Sellars praised his side for an excellent performance.
He said, “On a very difficult pitch I thought some of our football was excellent, I felt the majority of the game we were in control, it was a bit like last week at Reading where I was really pleased with them but the concern is getting that first goal and I thought once we’d got the goal we gained even more control.
“At the start of the season we went through a lot of changes, we’ve just gone through it again in terms of quite a few going out on loan and losing Donovan’s goals, but we believe it’s the right thing for him, and now it’s for other players to come and show that they’ve got the ability to do well.
“I’m really pleased with them, we had to adapt a little bit tactically which we hadn’t planned on but give the lads due credit because they sorted it out and I thought in terms of our organisation and how we played our football it was excellent.”
