Under-23 report | Burnley 0-0 Wolves

Burnley 0 Wolves 0

Wolves under-23s were held to a goalless draw at Burnley in their first match of 2021, despite enjoying the better chances in Lancashire.

Nigel Lonwijk came closest to a winner when his late header came back off the crossbar, meaning Wolves were forced to settle for a point.

Despite the difficult Lancashire conditions, it was Wolves would enjoy the lion’s share of the first-half chances, but failed to make any count, which would have disappointed James Collins.

After a tight opening half hour, Taylor Perry had the chance to open the scoring, but after latching on to Luke Matheson’s through ball, was denied by Lukas Jensen in the home goal.

In the closing stages of the half, the two best chances fell to Theo Corbeanu, however on both occasions the Canadian curled towards the top corner but failed to hit the target either time.

After the break, Meritan Shabani tested Jensen with an effort from range and, from the following corner, substitute Austin Samuels had the ball in the back of the net, but was denied by the offside flag.

Then, as the game entered added time, Wolves thought they’d won it when Lonwijk rose highest to meet Cundle’s corner, but the defender watched his header come back off the crossbar, and with that went the final chance.
