Under-23 preview | Wolves vs Reading

Wolves under-23s are back in Premier League 2 action on Monday evening as the side look to bounce back from their disappointing result in the Premier League Cup against Reading.

James Collins’ side are still unbeaten in the league in 2022, thanks to a pair of wins over Birmingham City and Sunderland and a point at home to Burnley.

However, Collins made several changes to his team last time out against Exeter as he started a side which included none of the players who were part of the FA Youth Cup quarter-final victory over Brighton & Hove Albion at Molineux on Saturday afternoon.

With just two days between matches for the younger members of the under-23 squad, it is yet to be seen as to whether they will be available for the development team, or if it will once again be a more senior looking side, and include players such as Faisu Sangare and Dongda He, who came off the bench in the Premier League Cup last week.

Sitting bottom of the Division 2 table, Reading come into the game having not won a fixture in any competition since late November – a 2-1 victory over Middlesbrough. Last time out, they suffered a heavy 7-0 loss away to Nottingham Forest.

Supporters who are unable to attend the game at Aggborough can watch all the action live as the match is streamed online via wolves.co.uk, the Wolves App and the Wolves YouTube channel.

WHAT THE BOSS THINKS

Collins is unsure as to whether or not he’ll have a full squad to choose from on Monday night, with several of his younger players in action for the under-18s on Saturday at Molineux.

“We’ll have a look at the under-18s, and I think two days after [the FA Youth Cup quarter-final] is doable, but we certainly don’t want to be ricking anybody injury-wise.

“That’s when the science comes in and maybe we’ll get one or two involved, but then it will probably be the majority of that group.

“Hopefully we’ll get better conditions and hopefully the pitch is better at Kidderminster, although it’s not perfect, it’s better and that might allow us to play a bit more of the football we like to play.”
