Turner departs Wolves after three seasons

After three full seasons, goalkeeper Shan Turner has departed Wolves Women following the conclusion of the 2023/24 campaign.

The 26-year-old made 59 appearances between the sticks after her initial arrival in April 2021 and was a league title winner with the Old Gold.

First featuring for the club towards the backend of the 2020/21 season, during which Wolves were successfully granted upward movement back into Tier 3, Turner’s signing from Boldmere St Michaels was officially announced ahead of the following campaign.

During her three seasons with Wolves, Turner became a key figure for Dan McNamara’s side as she lifted the Northern Premier Division trophy in 2021/22, as well as back-to-back Birmingham Challenge Cups.

Turner, who also worked for the Wolves Foundation as a schools educator, came to Molineux with the ambition of becoming a full international for her country and departs with six Northern Ireland caps to her name.

Last season, Turner made 10 appearances in all competitions as she battled with Bec Thomas for the number one spot, and manager McNamara has paid tribute to the stopper as she heads for pastures new.

“Shan’s been with us for a few years now and she’s had a fantastic journey with the football club,” McNamara said.

“She’s always acted with the utmost professionalism and I’ll always remember Shan as my first senior international. We worked hard with Shan when she first came in – she had a dream of playing for Northern Ireland and to see her representing her country at the Euros a couple of years back was a massive highlight for all of us, including Shan. I’m hugely proud of her for achieving her dream and we look forward to following her journey from a distance and hopefully she can go on to have many more successes.”

McNamara has praised Turner for the impact the goalkeeper has had during her time with Wolves and hopes the memories created can be long-lasting ahead of a fresh challenge elsewhere.

“The journey she’s been on since she came to the football club has been incredible. She came as a young player who was finding her way in the game. Very quickly, she turned herself into the number one over the last few years. She’s won National League titles, she’s won cups and she’s been involved in big memories at the football club. Hopefully she can take some of them away and look back on her time at Wolves with real positives and cherish those memories for years to come.

“We want to keep the best female players in the game and Shan is certainly one of them. Hopefully she finds what she needs out of an environment for the next stage of her journey and we’ll wish her all the luck in the world. Hopefully she can continue to have success, both internationally and domestically.”
