McNamara | 'We created enough to win the game'

Dan McNamara believes Wolves Women ‘shouldn’t have to settle’ for their point away at Stoke City.

The Old Gold drew 2-2 with the Potters on Sunday, and manager Dan McNamara felt deflated that his side didn’t take their chances and all three points. However, he was pleased with Amber Hughes’ two goals that added to her fantastic record ahead of Wednesday evening’s game at Sporting Khalsa.

On drawing at the bet365 Stadium

“I don’t even think it was a game of two halves. I don’t actually think we performed to the standard that we have been over the last few weeks.

“There were two good sides going at each other on a great pitch, but I felt we created enough to win the game.

“It’s the same story of the last few years, we don’t take chances and therefore the other teams will take their opportunities, and they (Stoke) took their two chances and scored.

“We shouldn’t have to settle for just a point because I thought we played some good football out there; we moved the ball well at times and opened them up, but it’s just the fine margins that was the difference between one point and three.

“I think we had more than enough of the ball and maybe some half chances that we could’ve capitalised more on. I set the girls a target of four points over two games and there’s one of the four, so we move onto Wednesday.”

On the late Becky Anderson chance and performance overall

“It was a tremendous effort from Becky (Anderson) and an even better save.

“We were on the winning end of one of these two weeks ago at Turf Moor and now suddenly, we are on the other end of it where their goalkeeper has probably kept them in the game and stopped them from losing all three points.

“Overall, I’m feeling quite deflated. I think after the expectations that we came into today with, we need to be putting in performances that are better than that.

“We don’t expect to have a top tier performance every week, but what we must stop doing is relying on Amber Hughes to score us the goals to win games. It’s fantastic for her as it’s another two goals and a great occasion for her, but we created more than enough chances for others to get on the scoresheet.”

On away at Sporting Khalsa on Wednesday

“We will make sure that we’re fresh and ready to go as best as we can. We will get past this now, it’s a point in the bag that keeps us up there and in check.

“It’s disappointing with how the game started and it’s key for us now as Sporting Khalsa are searching for their first win so we know it will be quite tight and hard to play through their fighting mentality, so we have to make sure that we’re ready for that and make sure that those half chances are turning into goals.”
