Roberts | 'It just wasn’t meant to be'

Beth Roberts was left feeling frustrated after defeat to Cheltenham Town, which resulted in Wolves Women exiting the FAWNL Plate.

Dan McNamara’s side had gone seven games unbeaten in all competitions until Sunday afternoon where Cheltenham beat the Old Gold 2-1 at Kayte Lane, and defender Roberts admitted post-match that the team are disappointed as they wanted to go far in the competition.

On the team’s performance

“I think it’s hard to know where to start. I think frustration sums it up.

“We had chances in the first half and conceded two poor goals, and probably let them into the game too much.

“Missing our chances meant we were under pressure and then we let it get a little bit frantic in the second half as we were just trying to force it.

“We could’ve kept the ball better and created chances playing football, like we are best at. So, we’re disappointed and frustrated.”

On the disappointment of being knocked out

“I think going into the Plate after being knocked out the League Cup made us determined and so we had our eye on this Plate for sure.

“I hope we weren’t a bit complacent today, thinking with it being the Plate and not the League Cup, but we definitely wanted to go far like we do in every cup that we’re in, but sadly it just wasn’t meant to be.”

On coming together to bounce back

“I think it’s what we’re best at to be fair. We have been through a lot of tough times as a group.

“For instance, the Forest loss, we bounced back from that really well. So, we will just go again when we’re back in training this week and go over the footage.

“We will see what we could’ve done better, take accountability, and then once we’ve done that, we will put it in the past and focus on the game next week and really get together as a team.”

The positives and looking ahead to Halifax

“I think the main positive is that some players have got minutes today that maybe haven’t got as many minutes as they would’ve wanted over the past few games, so it’s always really good for them to gain more experience.

“Whatever the team is against Halifax, whoever the subs are, everyone is ready because they’ve had a good amount of minutes in them.”
