Dan McNamara highlighted his team’s battling performance as they ran out narrow winners away at Liverpool Feds on Sunday afternoon.
Amber Hughes’ opener followed by a dramatic last-minute winner from Racheal Quigley gave Wolves Women an important victory at Liverpool Feds. McNamara credited the tough test provided by the opposition as well as praising his own team’s fight to come away with all three points.
On the tough game
“Credit to Liverpool Feds. The way they play this ground is unbelievable, the way Leanne sets the team up and how they thrive off the atmosphere and the people who come to support them is great.
“It’s nice and tight, they know how the pitch runs, and I thought they were excellent today. We talk about big teams and what they do when they aren’t at their best and to win that was a huge one.
“Credit to the girls, I thought they fought until the end and battled well. The second half I thought we moved the ball well, as well as big moments from Bec Thomas.
“Then Quigley, that’s the reason why we worked so hard to get her involved, she’s come up with a big moment at the end of the game to snatch it at the death.
“We’ll take it, but not many teams come here and win, and I don’t think they will for the rest of the season so massive credit to the girls.”
On the winner and three points
“I always felt like there was one moment left in the game, I didn’t know which way it was but when Amber gets in that area of the pitch, they say your nine is the best crosser of the ball because they know what they want. She’s hung it up, a beautiful cross, and Quigley is a big-time player, she knows how to stay cool in those moments and she slots it away.
“I thought we saw a different side of us today after the last few weeks where we’ve moved the ball well, played nice stuff and scored plenty of goals. Whereas today we weren’t at the races, and we’ve grinded a result out.
“Who knows, this one could be massive at the end of the season, but that takes us over the half-way point and as I’ve said the girls are doing great.”
On another cup opportunity next weekend
“We want to do well in them all, we want to get the County Cup back after disappointment last season.
“We want to make more memories in the FA Cup, but there is tough opposition, Sporting Khalsa are battling, and we want to make sure we treat every game with respect as it comes.”
On Remembrance Sunday
“It’s always a pleasure to represent the Air Force on Remembrance Day, it was a fantastic silence at the start by the girls and really well respected by everyone in the crowd.
“Everyone knows what it means for me today to represent the military so to do it with a game and to get the three points is massive. So, all round a good day.”
