Coventry Sphinx 0 Wolves Women 16

Wolves Women progressed into the next round of the Birmingham Challenge Cup after an outstanding win against Coventry Sphinx on Sunday.

In a competition Wolves know all too well, they started their campaign with an emphatic victory with the scoreline finishing at double figures of 16 in the second round tie.

Wolves dictated the play from the start and found themselves two to the good after the opening 15 minutes.

Destiney Toussaint opened the scoring in the eighth minute as a deep cross from Beth Merrick found the head of Tammi George who guided the ball delicately into the path of Toussaint to tap home.

Hannah Fryer doubled Wolves’ lead from a unique angle just four minutes later, to the fortune of the right-back, her attempt of a cross lobbed over the head of Taylor and into the inside netting.

Dan McNamara’s side showed no sign of slowing down when Amber Hughes pounced on a loose ball from Taylor in the 20th minute and after some link-up play with her strike partner Charlotte Greengrass, she finished clinically into the bottom corner.

In a six-minute period between the 32nd minute and the 38th minute, Wolves found the net three more times.

Toussaint had her second of the afternoon as Greengrass’ chipped effort looked like it was going to cross the goal line, but Toussaint was there to make sure and passed the ball into an empty net.

The number 12 did not have to wait long for her turn however, when her headed effort found the top corner shortly after.

In a mirror to Hughes’ earlier strike, George pounced on a loose ball in a similar fashion and slotted the ball past Taylor with ease.

Hughes secured her second of the afternoon with a ferocious half-volley into the top corner minutes after George’s effort.

Wolves still had plenty to play for, as Greengrass found the net once again after her swivel inside the area and smart finish into the bottom corner.

In the additional minutes of the half, Hughes’ strike deflected off Lottie Rosevear and bundled over the line before George enabled the Old Gold to get double figures before the break when her drilled effort across goal left Taylor with no chance.

After the interval, the hosts posed a threat and had an effort through Maddy Norton, however the attacker failed to hit the target.

Wolves continued their ruthlessness in front of goal when Merrick found the bottom corner just eight minutes after the restart.

Three minutes later, Toussaint rounded the goalkeeper and calmly slotted the ball into the net and secured her hat-trick.

16-year-old Madison Calder scored her first Wolves goal on the 60-minute mark, after her initial attempt to go around the goalkeeper was denied, before her neatly curled effort made its way into an unguarded net.

Five minutes later, she had her second after showing composure inside the area before the academy graduate fainted the defender and found the bottom corner.

Abbi Jenner then scored her first senior goal in the 80th minute after she latched onto a deep cross and found the corner.

Substitute Jade Cross made her impact on the game when her strike found the roof of the net just before the referee concluded the fixture.
