Women's report | Wolves 0-6 Man United

Wolves 0 Manchester United 6 (Terland 26, Galton 35, Mannion 51, Toone 54, Griffiths 88, 95)

Wolves Women were defeated against Women’s Super League side Manchester United in the Adobe Women’s FA Cup at the SEAH Stadium on Saturday evening.

In consecutive seasons, despite being a tier three side, McNamara’s team reached the fifth round of the competition but are yet to exceed further.

Marc Skinner’s side were quick out of the blocks and tested Bec Thomas on multiple occasions in the opening ten minutes, but Wolves’ number 13 stood strong when she was tested and made a fantastic diving save to keep out Grace Clinton’s effort.

A brave, last-gap sliding challenge from Anna Morphet denied Melvine Malard of a clear strike on goal minutes later, and the skipper got her praise from the Wolves faithful following the tackle.

Wolves created a chance of their own in the 14th minute, some excellent hold up play from Destiney Toussaint opened the space for Tammi George, she slid Amber Hughes through on goal where she was met by Phallon Tullis-Joyce, who collected the ball.

After some courageous and persistent defending from Wolves, the visitors broke the deadlock on the 26th minute, Elisabeth Terland tapped the ball home from close-range to give the Red Devils the lead.

Manchester United doubled their lead just ten minutes before the break, Leah Galton’s strike wrong-footed Thomas and her curled effort found the bottom corner.

Half-time | Wolves 0-2 Manchester United

After the interval, Wolves had an uphill task when the visitors added a third, Terland nodded the ball across to Aoife Mannion who stabbed the ball into an unguarded net.

Moments later, Ella Toone’s long-range strike proved to be an awkward one for Thomas, her strike dipped with power into the bottom corner to give United a cushion.

Chances were few and far between for the Old Gold, but Amber Hughes was involved in every attack and Wolves fans were waiting for the net to bulge when she looked to swivel and shoot inside the area, but Skinner’s side done enough to defend her opportunity.

Substitute Mared Griffiths added two goals before referee Lucy May brough the proceedings to a close.

Her first was tapped in following a scramble in the box and her second was a volley which flashed through the legs of Thomas and enabled Wolves’ memorable Cup campaign to a close.

McNamara’s side will now turn their attention to FA Women’s National League action when they host Sporting Khalsa on Wednesday 12th February.
