McNamara | 'We have togetherness more than any other club'

Dan McNamara was left happy with Wolves Women’s ‘terrific’ performance against league leaders Nottingham Forest.

Wolves Women played out an entertaining 1-1 draw at the City Ground on Sunday afternoon, after Melissa Johnson opened the scoring in the 19th minute, before Charlotte Greengrass pulled Wolves level just 30 seconds into the second half. McNamara touched on the performance that earnt a point, the tough run-in his side faces, and playing at a stadium like the City Ground.

On the performance

“I thought the girls were terrific, I didn't think we were that bad in the first half, we set up with a game plan that Forest sometimes struggle against, when you sit deeper and open up spaces in behind.

“When we had the courage to do that I thought we caused problems in the first half, I think we had three chances a piece, albeit one goal down because of sloppiness in the first half.

“Before the second half I said, you’ve got 45 minutes, what are you going to do with it? If we left here today with nothing that's effectively the league over, and I thought we were tremendous, maybe on another day we nick it.

“I think Charlotte had a chance towards the end, where the keeper came out then stayed, but I thought we were tremendous, the whole effort right round the group. I thought for Lily Simkin to come back to her old stomping ground and put in a performance like that was outstanding.

“Delighted with them all. We go into six more games and we’re still in it, which is a remarkable achievement looking back to where we were six, seven months ago.”

On the tough run-in

“The girls have got to dig in deep, but I keep saying every week, we shouldn't be doing what we are doing, but we are because of the amazing people who are involved from top to bottom.

“Everyone works together and I said to them before we came out, we don't have the money or resources that some do, but we do have togetherness, togetherness more than any other club.

“I thought they showed that in moments today, we were under the cosh for parts of today, they’re a top, top side and then they bring on three players who have played at the top level so you have to go again.

“But I thought they were incredible, front to back. Some people might think they could have been more effective in the game, but I asked for a performance built around heart and desire, which we saw today, and is why we leave here still very much in it.”

On playing at the City Ground

“This is a historic place, it’s an unbelievable place to play in, we don’t need motivation to step up, this group of girls already has enough from what's gone on in their careers over the last five or six years.

“We put the players on the pitch and they feed their own motivation, however to come to stadiums like this, to get the opportunity is amazing.

“It’s a showcase for women’s football, another fantastic display from both sets of players, full of determination and putting everything on the line.

“It’s brilliant but we don't find motivation from where we play, we find it trying to do the impossible like we got told at the start of the year.”
