Dan McNamara lauded his ‘special’ group of players after Wolves Women defeated Burnley Women.
Wolves hosted Burnley at the SEAH Stadium on Sunday afternoon, with the hosts 2-1 winners. Charlotte Greengrass netted a brace, taking her league tally to 18 goals for the season, as a strong team performance took Wolves level on points with league leaders Nottingham Forest - Forest with a game in hand. McNamara touched on the performance, errors leading to goals, team spirit, and the run in, with a trip to Halifax up next.
On the performance
“I thought it was a really high quality game of football. What an advert for tier three and we talk about some of the quality on that pitch today, they are a top side, Burnley are a top top side, they've got some very good individuals all over the pitch.
“We managed to find a way, but no disrespect to my group, I thought we played really well. I thought in moments we could have been a bit better with the ball, but I thought our press was tireless and when we got into our structure we really threatened, especially in that second half.
“So really pleased, and as we said, at the end of the day, we wanted to make sure we'd cemented second spot and I think the way results have gone, that might have just reignited what happened in the last couple games.
“I’ve said to the girls, the hardest thing to do is to get over the line. We've seen it three years ago, the hardest thing is to get over the line. It doesn't matter who you're playing, so we just have to keep doing our job and today we did that job. I thought we really deserved those three points, really good.”
On errors leading to goals
“We forced them into errors and we knew how Burnley were going to play out from the back, and we set up, worked tirelessly all week, and so the error comes from our press.
“If there's no errors in football, the game would be boring, so yes there were errors leading to goals, but let's not take anything away from the girls. I've taken on some great information this week from the coaches and they've gone out and executed that and rightly, deservedly gone 1-0 up.
“A little disappointed with our mistake, which Bec will be as well, but then you look at the saves she's made just after that, and all of a sudden she's keeping us in the game.
“But like I said, high quality all over the pitch and I'm just delighted for the girls, you can hear them singing, because they are a great group.
“They're a great group and I can only keep doing what I'm doing and hoping we can keep them together because they are a special group of people and they need to keep enjoying days like this. We've got two more occasions where we can do this together, so let’s see what things happen.”
On Halifax next up
“As I said earlier on, Forest should win this league, there's no question about it. Forest should win the league. However, the hardest thing to do is to get over the line and all we can do is keep doing our job.
“It puts us potentially three points behind them, and they've got a couple of tough away days like Liverpool Feds. But if they do their job, they win the league. If they don’t, we have to make sure we're ready and waiting to capitalise on anything that we can do.
“Really pleased and delighted for the group and hopefully we can now enjoy next weekend. It should be a rest again then hopefully we can get those points that'll keep the pressure on at Halifax.”
