McNamara | 'They deserve a lot of success'

Dan McNamara praised his ‘unbelievable’ Wolves Women squad following another huge victory, this time against Halifax Women.

Wolves beat Halifax 6-1 on Sunday afternoon with Charlotte Greengrass (3), Beth Merrick, Amber Hughes and Racheal Quigley all making their way onto the scoresheet. McNamara was overjoyed with his side, who remained level on points with leaders Nottingham Forest heading into their final game.

On the performance

“I thought the girls were fantastic, I thought that the first half was one of the finest displays of the season. The way that they moved the ball was tremendous and they did everything we asked of them.

“We really utilised the space in the wider areas, and we knew that was an area that we could really hurt Halifax today. I’m really pleased; I thought we were fantastic.

“The second half is always hard then to replicate what you’ve just done in the first half but overall, I’ve just said to the girls then at the end, for us to take it to the final day, all we had to do was win today and to take it to the final day is just unbelievable.

“I think it’s up there with the best achievements that I have certainly had in my seven years at Wolves. They’re just brilliant, they’re brilliant people and they deserve a lot of success.

“Hopefully in years to come, we’ll see some of these names higher up in the football pyramid, they’re superb.”

On the goals scored

“I think the partnership that Charlotte and Amber have put together over this season is unbelievable. 40 league goals between them is phenomenal over a 22-game season, working at two goals a game between them is ridiculous.

“I think we saw that again today, the work rate from each other helps the other one get on the scoresheet. The third goal for Charlotte, where Amber drops into the pocket and Becky Anderson finds her with a pass into that empty space.

“The way that they’ve been this year has been remarkable, and hopefully one of them will go on to win the golden boot in two weeks’ time.

“Charlotte has been fantastic all year ever since she came in, she’s a pleasure to work with, as well as all of the girls, they’re amazing people. They all deserve the world.

“Even Quigz (Quigley), she came on off the bench and grabbed another goal, I think her goal to minute ratio is an absolute joke, but they’re phenomenal and they thoroughly deserved another three points.”

On looking ahead to the final game against Liverpool Feds

“There are no expectations, we knew that if Forest win their games, they win the league. For us to even be in this position is just remarkable.

“We’re talking astronomical differences in what we’re both spending so it’s incredible that we’ve finished second in such a tough league.

“Next weekend is the last one, the final dance if you like for this group. It’s been amazing to work with them but at the end of the season people often go their separate ways and you have to rejuvenate and go again.

“But let’s really enjoy the last two weeks together as a group. We’ve had some unbelievable memories together over the last few years and hopefully we can create one more next weekend against Liverpool Feds.”
